Sadly Douglas was killed in action in France fewer than six weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. In 1924 Miers joined the Royal Navy and volunteered for the Submarine Service in 1929. He acquired the lower-deck nickname Gamp, after the Dickens’ character Mrs Gamp who carried a bulky umbrella. Miers would often appear in the conning tower of HMS Rainbow with an umbrella to ward off tropical storms.

In November 1940 Miers was given command of HMS Torbay (N79), a T-class submarine.

In March 1941 she sailed from Portsmouth on her first offensive patrol, to intercept the battleships ‘Scharnhorst’ and ‘Gneisenau’. Unable to find them, Torbay was ordered to continue to Gibraltar and, after another patrol in the Mediterranean, to join the 1st Flotilla at Alexandria. From there, Torbay operated for the next 12 months, sinking numerous ships and taking part in several special operations.

During March 1942 in Corfu Harbour, Torbay fired torpedoes at a destroyer and two transports, scoring hits on the two supply ships. Torbay then had a hazardous withdrawal to the open sea, enduring 40 depth charges. The submarine had been in closely patrolled enemy waters for 17 hours. For this exploit Miers was awarded the Victoria Cross.

In 2005 the Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers formed an association with the then HMS Torbay, a nuclear submarine. This arose from the link with her predecessor, the fourth HMS Torbay, commanded by Miers. A photographic portrait of Miers wearing the gown and badge of office as Master of the Company hung in the wardroom of the submarine until decommissioning.

From December 1942 Miers served as submarine liaison officer to the American Pacific Fleet. From July 1944 he was Commander (Submarines) of the 8th Submarine Flotilla in the Far East based in Sri Lanka and later Fremantle, Australia.

Following the War, Miers remained in the Navy and was promoted to captain in December 1946. He was commanding officer of the naval establishments HMS Vernon, HMS Blackcap, HMS Forth, 1st submarine squadron and the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He commanded the aircraft carrier HMS Theseus for a year from December 1954. He was promoted to rear admiral in January 1956 and became Flag Officer, Middle East, until retirement in August 1959. Miers was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1958 and Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1959.

Miers was the 25th member of his family to become a Liveryman of the Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers. The first was admitted to the Company in August 1680. A memorable event during Miers’ own year as Master was a dinner in the Painted Hall at Greenwich, where he had been Commandant some thirty years previously.

Miers died at home in Roehampton, London, on 30th
June 1985. He is buried at Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness.
